7 PBN Footprint Mistakes That Will Get You Penalized

PBN Footprints

Building a PBN is one thing. Keeping it safe from Google's footprint detection is another. Many SEOs invest thousands of dollars into expired domains and lose everything because of easily avoidable mistakes. Here are the seven most common PBN footprint errors — and how to fix them.

1. Same IP Address Across Multiple Domains

This is the most common and most dangerous footprint. If 20 PBN domains all resolve to the same IP, any crawler — including Google's — can see that connection instantly. Always use a hosting provider that gives each domain a truly unique IP address.

2. Same Registrar With the Same Account

WHOIS data (even with privacy protection) can expose patterns. Using the same registrar account, same payment method, or same registrant details across all your PBN domains creates a trail. Spread your registrations across multiple registrars and use privacy protection on all of them.

3. Identical WordPress Themes or Plugins

Running the same WordPress theme on every PBN site is a glaring footprint. Google can fingerprint themes and plugins. Use different themes, customize them, and vary your plugin stack across sites.

4. Thin or Duplicate Content

Copy-pasted or spun content is a strong signal that a site is part of a network. Each PBN site needs unique, reasonably quality content. It doesn't have to be Pulitzer-worthy, but it needs to be original and relevant to the site's niche.

5. All Sites Linking to the Same Money Site

If every domain in your PBN has a link pointing to one URL, that's an unmistakable pattern. Mix up your link targets. Link to other authority sites, link to different pages on your money site, and vary anchor text naturally.

6. Same Analytics or Adsense ID

Reusing the same Google Analytics property ID or Adsense publisher ID across multiple domains is one of the easiest ways Google can connect your sites. Use different accounts — or skip tracking entirely on PBN sites.

7. No Contact or About Pages

PBN sites that look like real websites have contact pages, about pages, and privacy policies. Sites with zero content and only a few posts with outbound links look exactly like what they are. Add a basic contact page and about section to every PBN site.

The Bottom Line

Footprint elimination is about creating genuine diversity across your network. Every signal that connects your PBN sites to each other is a liability. Treat each domain as if it needs to stand alone as a real, independent website.
